Zero HIV Stigma Day in Brighton & Hove

Join us for a community event marking International Zero HIV Stigma Day

Come together with us in Brighton & Hove for a special community event marking International Zero HIV Stigma Day.

This year’s theme is Community and Collaboration, celebrating the power of communities to challenge stigma, show support, and create change together.

Hosted by local drag queen Mary O’Kart, the event will include:

  • inspiring speeches from people living with HIV and local leaders
  • music from the fabulous Rainbow Chorus
  • Complimentary food and drink from Lunch Positive

This is an event for everyone who wants to learn more about HIV stigma, support people living with HIV, and be part of making Brighton & Hove the first HIV Stigma Free City!

Why Zero HIV Stigma Day matters

International Zero HIV Stigma Day is held on 21 July, the birthday of Prudence Nobantu Mabele (21 July 1971 – 10 July 2017), the first woman in South Africa to publicly disclose her HIV status.

Her courage continues to inspire people around the world to challenge stigma and stand up for dignity, compassion and understanding.

HIV stigma is still a real issue. It can stop people from going for an HIV test, accessing treatment and care, or speaking openly about their experiences. Stigma can also lead to isolation and have a lasting impact on both mental and physical health.

In Brighton & Hove, we are committed to tackling HIV stigma as part of our work as an HIV Fast-Track City. Embed this  link HIV in Brighton & Hove

HIV in Brighton & Hove

People living with HIV tell us:

  • HIV doesn’t stigmatise – people do
  • Stigma hurts more than HIV
  • HIV is a health condition, not an identity

These messages are a powerful reminder that ending stigma starts with all of us.

Can you help?

We want Brighton & Hove to be a city where people living with HIV can choose to speak openly about their diagnosis without fear of judgement or rejection.

Help us build that city.

You can make a difference by:

  • seeing the person, not the virus
  • challenging HIV stigma when you hear or see it
  • changing the way you think and talk about HIV
  • supporting a kinder, more informed community

Together, we can make Brighton & Hove a place where everyone feels respected, included and supported.
